99 Days to Pentecost: Day 7

Day 7 - February 20, 2021
1 John 3:16-19 (Read Full Chapter)
16 We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers and sisters. 17 But whoever has worldly goods and sees his brother or sister in need, and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God remain in him? 18 Little children, let’s not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. 19 We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will set our heart at ease before Him,

In John 3:16, one of the most iconic Bible verses in modern Christianity, the great love of God is made known. He rescues sinners from sin and provides redemption by the sacrifice of His one and only begotten Son, Jesus. This love conquered death, sin, and an eternal separation from God. In 1 John 3:16, we again read how we know of God’s love, through the very life that was laid down for us by Jesus, but in this account, John additionally refers to the cross for the purpose of charging believers to be ones who lay down their lives for brothers and sisters.
Indeed, love conquers all. But in stressing the degree of sacrifice, the Apostle John highlights once more, the delicate intricacy of love’s two states, the potential and the actual. Merely declaring our love is but one half of love (word or tongue). While you may say over and over that you love a brother or sister, if you aren't acting on that love (deed and truth), then he or she is not being loved. Very simply and directly put, John presses us to remember, love is both a state of being and a call to action, without both, love is incomplete.
As love is by which death was overcome in Jesus, we are more than mere passive beneficiaries from some benevolent benefactor. Rather, we are inheritors who are actively tasked to carry on this same purpose in His name. In our call as followers of Christ, we are charged with loving one another to the degree of the greatest example by laying ourselves down for the sake of others putting action to our words.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you so much for the Cross, for your unrelenting love that came for us in the midst of our sin through Jesus. Nothing turned you away, not rejection, not scorn, not ignorance, nothing. We pray for the same heart of love to be pure and powerfully demonstrated in our lives for each other, through your Spirit. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
