Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he fell asleep.

“The First Martyr”
Written by Pastor Joe Suh

In this lengthy but amazing chapter we find Stephen defending himself to the Jewish leaders.  He goes through the Jewish history in the Old Testament and one thing is very clear, Stephen knows his scripture.  I cannot say whether Stephen knew what was coming at the end of his speech, but he spoke clearly and powerfully because he was filled with the Holy Spirit (7:55).
Stephen’s ministry is characterized by obedience and faithfulness to what he was called to do.  He delivered food to widows and proclaimed truth in the face of persecution.  He lived with a single-minded focus…he was sold out for the Gospel.  In the end, he was stoned to death because he stood for what was right and true without backing down.  As the first martyr we see from Stephen’s life what it is to live with the certainty of an eternity with Jesus.

Take time to reread Acts 7 and prayerfully reflect on God’s Word to you through this chapter.
