99 Days to Pentecost: Day 36

Day 36 - March 21, 2021
Mark 3:31-35 (Read Full Chapter)
31 Then His mother and His brothers came, and while standing outside they sent word to Him, calling for Him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are outside looking for You.” 33 Answering them, He *said, “Who are My mother and My brothers?” 34 And looking around at those who were sitting around Him, He *said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God, this is My brother, and sister, and mother.”
“Wholly Devoted”
Written by Pastor Joseph Noh
Growing up as a pastor’s kid, I complained once about my dad’s lack of availability for me. My dad sat me down and began to place 3 empty cups in front of me, and labeled them: “God”, “Family”, “Everything Else”. He then gave me another cup full of rice grains (metaphorically representing my personal devotion) and asked me to distribute the rice as I felt was appropriate. Not to be outsmarted, I wisely placed the majority into the cup labeled “God” and the remainder in the final two. After I finished, my father told me that he prays I live my life differently and he then took the other two cups and emptied them into the first cup: “God”.
I thought that was crazy.
He then grabbed our large rice bag and used it to fill all three cups to the brim.
I said that was cheating.
But then he told me, when I devote myself to God first, wholly and fully, then God pours out abundantly more and takes care of more than I can imagine. Where I am limited, God is unlimited.
Jesus calls us to this same type of devotion and these verses remind us of how he was wholly centered on the Kingdom work. It is not about foolish ignorance of other responsibilities or rejecting our family that is being advocated, but a powerful recognition that joining God’s will is the place to be and holding that in the highest regard. It is not about minimizing something aside from God that is the focus here, but elevating to the rightful place, an obedience to God.
Prayer: Father, there is none like you. You are worthy of all our praise and we seek to devote our hearts in the fullest to serve and love you and your kingdom work. Thank you for the joy of being called your family and being a part of your will on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
