99 Days to Pentecost: Day 30

Day 30 - March 15, 2021
Psalm 75:7, 10 (Read Full Chapter)
7 But God is the Judge;
He puts down one and exalts another...
10 And He will cut off all the horns of the wicked,
But the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.
“Pride Before the Fall”
Written by Pastor Samuel Pyo
“Schadenfreude” is a German word that means to take satisfaction in watching the trouble or failure of others. As a pastor, I am ashamed to admit that sometimes there is much satisfaction in seeing the proud fall. When I was in college, I enjoyed watching the UFC which is a competition of some of the greatest MMA fighters in the world. One fighter in particular stood out to me: Anderson Silva. He was a very skilled, yet arrogant fighter. He would go in the ring and showboat, running circles around his opponents. He would often be seen before matches, as he was waiting for the starting bell to ring, goading and challenging his opponent to come at him.
According to this psalm, Anderson Silva could be seen as the proud wicked man who boasts only in his own strength. Taking pride in his own accomplishments. Mocking and belittling others around him. I think we all know what happens to a fighter like Anderson Silva. In the second round of one of his title defense fights, he was floored by a strong hook to the chin. In an instant, all his boasting seemed foolishly premature and inappropriate. The proud wicked man had fallen.
As I reflect on this psalm, I can’t help but ask myself, “Am I like the proud wicked man? The one who is unaware of his ways?” The psalmist writes that God is the only One who is steadfast and true. We are all living on the ever shifting sands of this world. If we are not firmly tied to the pillar of truth and righteousness, all of our ways will be untrue, and our foundation will be built on sand. We may not even recognize it, which is why it is vital to be rooted in His humility and steadfast righteousness.
Prayer: Lord, may You reveal to us the unrighteous ways of our heart, so that we may repent and be tied to You. Lord, show us how to live in Your righteousness above all. May we walk in Your path forever. Amen.
