99 Days to Pentecost: Day 19

Day 19 - March 4, 2021
Hosea 10:11-13 (Read Full Chapter)
Ephraim is a trained heifer that loves to thresh, And I passed over her lovely neck; I will harness Ephraim, Judah will plow, Jacob will harrow for himself. Sow for yourselves, with a view to righteousness; Harvest in accordance with kindness. Break up your uncultivated ground, For it is time to seek the Lord Until He comes and rains righteousness on you. You have plowed wickedness, you have harvested injustice, You have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your way, in your many warriors.
“A Steward for God’s Purposes”

As soon as I passed my driver’s license test in high school, my mom very generously bought me my first car. After I was able to start driving others, she asked me to pick up and drop off our elderly church members who couldn’t drive. It was a great need at that time in our home church to help our elderly members attend Sunday services without having to use public transportation. From the start, she gave me this gift and made it clear that it is a gift to be used for good, for serving God, and for a bigger purpose beyond myself.
We are learning a lot through Hosea about Israel’s sinful ways. What further aspect of sin can we learn from this chapter in Hosea? Hosea 10:1 says, “Israel is a luxuriant vine; he produces fruit for himself. The more his fruit, the more altars he made; the richer his land, the better he made the sacred pillars.” Sin is when man takes something good that is given from God and neglects to steward the gift towards God’s purposes. Instead, the good is used to serve selfish purposes and dishonors the Giver. While God gave Israel the gift of the promised land and many other blessings, they built altars to other gods in the land and acted in wicked ways to satisfy their desires and pleasures instead of stewarding the land for God’s purposes. In His righteousness, God rebukes Israel saying, “You have plowed wickedness, you have harvested injustice.” Through the prophet Hosea, God calls the people to invest their time and their gifts in ways that align with His righteousness and goodness.
What are God’s gifts in your life? How are you stewarding these gifts for God’s purposes and in service of His kingdom?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for every gift you have given me, such as my education, opportunities, relationships, ability to speak different languages, and even time! I repent that I have directed these gifts for my own desires. Break down any path that I have built for myself. Empower me to steward these gifts for Your kingdom purposes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
