99 Days to Pentecost: Day 31

Day 31 - March 16, 2021
Psalm 76:7-9 (Read Full Chapter)
7 You, You indeed are to be feared,
And who may stand in Your presence, once You are angry?
8 You caused judgment to be heard from heaven;
The earth feared and was still
9 When God arose to judgment,
To save all the humble of the earth.

“Beginning of Wisdom”
Written by Pastor Samuel Pyo

Growing up in a Korean family, one thing was clear to me. I need to have a healthy fear of my father. My parents were both relatively young at 29 when they had me, and I was able to play games and have a lot of fun with them, especially my father. But at the end of the day, he was not my friend, he was my father. There was one time I remember in elementary school, I was playing on my Gameboy, and because my dad wanted to engage with me and know what I loved, he also bought a Gameboy to play with me. We played Mario together, and when I got Pokemon, he got Pokemon. He would ask me for help, and one time while trying to help him, I got frustrated and called him “stupid”. The shock and anger in his face was evident, and I immediately knew that I had made a terrible mistake.

The psalmist here writes that indeed, God is to be feared. There is no one who can stand in the presence of God when He is angry. We need to be those who know just how powerful and mighty our God is. We cannot mess around with God like He is our “buddy”or “pal”. This is God, Creator of all things, Lord over our souls. Jesus tells us that we are not to fear the one who can just kill the body, but rather we must fear the One who can kill both body and soul. We must have a healthy fear of God. And when we have the proper view and fear of God, we can truly begin to live in wisdom.

Prayer: God, may we fear You, for You are mighty and above all things. We cannot know Your ways, for Your ways are higher than our ways. Lord, may we view You correctly, and be amazed that we are loved and accepted as Your sons and daughters. We don’t deserve Your love and for that, we thank You. Amen.
