99 Days to Pentecost: Day 47

Day 47 - April 1, 2021

Mark 14:3-5 (Read Full Chapter)
While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the Leper, He was reclining at the table, and a woman came with an alabaster vial of very expensive perfume of pure nard. She broke the vial and poured the perfume over His head. 4 But there were some indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted? 5 For this perfume could have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they were scolding her.

“Love is Waste”
Written by Pastor Joe Suh

Have you ever offered a true act of love for Jesus? What do I mean by an act of true love? It is an act of love that comes from a place of humility that does not count the cost, even when considered wasteful by others.

Here, we see a woman who comes to the feet of Jesus and pours out an entire vial of oil (perfume) over His head. She also poured it on His feet and wiped it with her hair (John 12:3). She was blessing Jesus with all that she had. To her, there was no thought of what it cost, only an overflow of devotion and love for Jesus. This perfume was worth an entire year’s wages, yet she did not think twice about blessing Jesus with it.

As she did this, there were others present making negative comments about what she had done. However, Jesus tells them to leave her alone and stop bothering her. She had done a good deed for Him (v. 6).

Jesus saw the heart of this woman. He knew the bottle was all she had to offer and she offered it all, without hesitation. This is the type of love and devotion our Savior deserves. What seemed like waste to others was actually a great blessing to Jesus.

He took the sin of the world to the cross which allows all of us to have eternal life in Heaven with God. I think we often lose sight of this truth. Or we do not fully understand what Jesus has done for us. There is obviously no way we can repay Him, but at least we can live a life that is reflective of what Jesus has done for us. In our own ways, we can pour out all of our oil for Jesus. Instead of calculating our devotion, there should be no price we can put on our love for Jesus.

This ordinary woman is remembered right alongside Jesus (v. 9). To Jesus, her act of devotion was worthy of remembering. What is your act of love and devotion for Jesus?  Will it be remembered?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the ultimate sacrifice You made for all of us. Thank You that no act of love is wasteful in Your eyes as You alone are worthy. Help us to love You more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
