99 Days to Pentecost: Day 51

Day 51 - April 5, 2021
Philippians 2:2-5 (Read Full Chapter)
2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. 3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus.
“Christ’s Humility”
Written by Pastor Tina Hsu
Philippians 2:5-11 is a key passage in Scripture about the humility of Jesus. Scholars write that this is actually a hymn in the early church that Paul incorporated into his letter, for it beautifully explains how Jesus, being fully God, humbled himself to be a servant in humanity to deliver us from the ultimate consequence of sin. After humbling Himself by dying on the cross, God raised Him to life and exalted Him to an eternal throne. The application for believers in light of Christ’s model is simply put in Paul’s words, “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus” (Phil 2:5).
Anyone who lives with family, is married, has co-workers, serves in any team setting, or is part of a community can testify that “being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose” is extremely hard because we are all sinful, have blind spots, and come from different cultures and backgrounds. Unity in the midst of diversity is truly a GOD thing, and it is only possible with the love and humility of Christ in our hearts.
Although it is a high call, Paul gives us the vision to work towards unity in our church body, and he teaches us that the way to become united is to have the same attitude as Jesus Christ. While it is important to tend to our own priorities, it is just as vital for the church’s unity that its members prioritize one another by sacrificially serving one another, just like Christ emptied Himself to serve us. As a result, God exalted Him and Christ’s work bore lasting fruit, and we are all recipients of His gracious and powerful work.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your great love through Your Son, Jesus Christ. I will fix my eyes on Jesus and regularly consider His life and His ways. May the life of Christ influence me greatly so that I can live out Christ’s love towards my church. Help me to hear Your guidance for how to tangibly look out for the interest of others today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
