“Active Faith”
Written by Pastor Won Kim

I don’t know about you, but when I go to sleep, I place my phone at a particular spot on my bedside table. I would suspect many of us leave it at a particular place because we wake up in a state of “blindness” in the morning. I don’t look for my phone, I feel for my phone. Bartimaeus is a shining example of active faith. His unrelenting conviction that Jesus can and will rescue him from his need is evident in all he does, including the throwing off of his cloak. If I threw my phone haphazardly to the side before I went to bed and urgently needed it in the middle of the night, my hands would be searching for it everywhere. When Bartimaeus is called by Jesus, he does something that a blind man wouldn’t do. He threw off his cloak. A blind man would usually keep his possessions close at hand instead of throwing it off to the side. By throwing off his cloak, I see the faith of a man who can spiritually see, a man who won’t need to beg because he’ll be able to physically see. His behavior and reactions to the person of Jesus give away that every fiber of his being believes that Jesus will heal him. That’s what faith looks like.

Prayer: Dear God, help us to see the unseen spiritual truths in our lives. Help us to see the royalty of our Lord and Savior as Bartimaeus can. Allow us to live out faith in every fiber of our being. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
