Day 42 - March 27, 2021
Mark 9:36-37 (Read Full Chapter)
And He took a child and placed him among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, “Whoever receives one child like this in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me.”
"Name Above All Names"

I had a conversation with someone who in a former life, ran with the elites of society. She told me that her name alone could get here into the most exclusive restaurants, clubs, and venues. People wouldn’t even know her face—her name would carry enough weight that they didn’t need to. What was impossible to most is possible because of her name.
For us, this kind of reality seems so far fetched. I cannot even imagine what it’s like to have my name carry that much weight—I’m just thankful the coffeeshop writes the correct name on my cup. But there is indeed a Name so great, so weighty, that it can change everything for us.
In today’s passage, we begin to see just how great Jesus is. All of history finds its resolve in Him. Everything established has been established for Him. And in His grace, He allows us to participate in His greatness.
In Him, even the simplest of tasks such as giving a cup of water or receiving a child holds infinite value. In fact, it’s not even compassion towards the thirsty or the young; it’s because He commands us. It’s for His great Name that when we do things in or for the name of Christ, we are investing in something beyond measure. Simply put, Christ changes everything.
Are we like the disciples? Busy thinking about the greatness of our own names that we miss out on living for true greatness? Because living for His greatness will not seem that great to the world. It looks like a basic cup of water.
But to us who’ve seen and experienced His greatness, we know simple obedience is better than sacrifice. We lean not on our own understanding. And the promise is clear: you shall by no means lose your reward.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we praise Your Holy Name! There is none like You. Thank You that we can live for Your great name. Help us to seek no other name, especially our own. In Your matchless Name we pray, amen.
