99 Days to Pentecost: Day 39

Day 39 - March 24, 2021
Mark 6 (Read Full Chapter)
35 And when it was already late, His disciples came up to Him and said, “This place is secluded and it is already late; 36 send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37 But He answered them, “You give them something to eat!” And they *said to Him, “Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread, and give it to them to eat?” 38 But He *said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go look!” And when they found out, they *said, “Five, and two fish.”

Problem solving, reasoning, and critical thinking are valued skills. These skills become particularly relevant to demonstrate when interviewing for a job. I remember being asked once: “How many ping pong balls will fill a Boeing 747?”
Identifying how an individual arrives at their answer supposedly provides an insight into their mind, ability, and uniqueness. A similar process sticks out in the account of feeding the five thousand regarding heart, faith, and trust.
The disciples anticipate the problem of the hungry crowds, and the first step is to propose they be sent away. When Jesus instead answers to feed the people, communicating his desire, they respond ironically about needing to spend a large amount of money that they do not have.
Jesus then goes a step further. Notice that he does not multiply money. He doesn't work in the realm of the disciples' thinking. He instead addresses the direct need: he asks for food.
What would it have looked like for the disciples to have sought out food and expected Jesus to do something incredible? The hearts of the disciples are exposed through Jesus’ ask. Their understanding does not register who Jesus is and what Jesus can do, remaining in their worldly understanding of their situation instead.
The matters that call out our faith and trust will reveal our heart and exactly how we invite or not invite Jesus to aid us. How are we doing what we can and laying it at Jesus’ feet with trust and peace? At times, Jesus may ask us what we already know and we may still feel it is impossible, but what would it look like to seek him and come back with loaves and fish, ready for Jesus to respond?
Prayer: God, we repent of the ways we ask and inquire of You but stop short of stepping in with faith to see You move through us. May we not hold onto complaining hearts or feel entitled, may we trust You with faith! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
