99 Days to Pentecost: Day 49

Day 49 - April 3, 2021

Passage: Mark 16:5-6 (Read Full Chapter)
And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. 6 But he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; see, here is the place where they laid Him.

“He Has Risen”
Written by Pastor Joe Suh

These three words powerfully affirm all that we believe.  “He has risen!”  After a long week, a betrayal by one of His own, a sham of trial, a brutal beating, a march to the cross, and a horrific death, Jesus fulfills the prophecy and defeats death.  The resurrection of Jesus is the centerpiece of the Gospel message.  Without the resurrection, there is no Christian faith.  There is no belief in Jesus.

The first people to come to the tomb and find it empty were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome (v. 1).   They went to the tomb to honor Jesus – they wanted to anoint His body with spices.  Does this sound familiar?  Remember in Mark 14, Jesus was anointed with oil as an act of love.  However, instead of completing this act of love these women were commissioned for a more important duty.  They were to announce the news of the resurrection (v. 7).  Why?

Jesus had spoken repeatedly about His death and resurrection (8:31).  However, it would seem that either no one understood or no one truly believed what He was saying.  As such, these three women were instructed to go to tell the others that the tomb was empty.  This is the news that affirmed the peoples’ faith in Jesus.

The resurrection of Jesus changed everything.  Sin, death and the evil one have all been defeated.  In exchange for His death and resurrection we have eternal life, healing, restoration and the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us until we meet Jesus again.

Take a moment today to pray and meditate on Jesus’ sacrifice for us.  Ask yourself, do you honestly live with an eternal perspective?

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for all that you have done for us.  In your death and resurrection, we have eternal life.  We look forward to the day we see you again.  May we all live a life that brings glory to you.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
