99 Days to Pentecost: Day 24

Day 24 - March 9, 2021
Malachi 1:6-8 (Read Full Chapter)
6 “‘A son honors his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My respect?’ says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests who despise My name. But you say, ‘How have we despised Your name?’ 7 You are presenting defiled food upon My altar. But you say, ‘How have we defiled You?’ In that you say, ‘The table of the Lord is to be despised.’ 8 But when you present the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? And when you present the lame and sick, is it not evil? Why not offer it to your governor? Would he be pleased with you? Or would he receive you kindly?” says the Lord of hosts.
“Giving God Our Best”
Written by Pastor Seong Hwang
Malachi, the last book of the Old Testament, addresses the sins of the people and priests of post-exilic Israel. God graciously allowed Israel to return from exile. Afterward, the temple was successfully rebuilt. Yet, as time went by, their devotion to God and their worship of Him grew cold. The people and the priests of Israel neglected to honor and fear Him in their lives.
God's law required the burnt offering to be a male from the herd without defect (Leviticus 1:3). Instead of giving God their best, the Israelites brought to Him defiled offerings—bringing blind, lame, or diseased animals for sacrifice. Their selfish actions and attitude showed they approached worship with a casual and convenient heart rather than reverence. The priests were responsible for teaching the people proper worship, but failed to make these corrections. They despised His Name and disregarded God by giving their leftovers for worship. And when confronted, the priests pleaded ignorance instead of repenting.
Reading this passage spoke to my heart and led me to repentance, knowing that I have also given God my leftovers. My leftover time, money, heart, and attention. I pray that as we read this chapter today, we will be reminded to go before him in repentance. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Also, let us be reminded to give our best, our first fruits, to our God. He is our heavenly Father and Master. He deserves so much more.
Prayer: Lord, we thank You for this timely reminder and correction. You are our Heavenly Father and Master who loves us so much. We pray that we will honor You with our best and our first fruits every day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
